Rebel Belle // A Seat at the Table

When you live in the South, no matter what you do, its spirit will start to pervade your life. If you’ve ever seen the documentary Muscle Shoals (and if you haven’t – please stop reading and watch it immediately), you can hear musicians recount the musical magic that remarkably came to Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Bono recounts, “it’s like the songs come out of the mud.” That sort of magic can be found all over the South, not just in the music.

I loved this dress because it reminds me of the best parts of southern style. It has grace and beauty, but I also liked that that it was dark and dramatic – and different from the norm.

Keeping on a southern note, I recently received Solange’s album A Seat at the Table on vinyl as a gift (thank you!). This album was heavy on my Spotify when it first came out, and now that I have it on vinyl its only resurfaced as a favorite.

The album in its entirety is airy, soulful, and personal – with Solange’s parents speaking in the interludes about racism and being black in America. In the track I’m playing for you, Solange sings “I got a lot to be mad about” and pulls it off with grace and softness, but with enough punch in the lyrics to make you think.
